Cory Asbury follows the runaway success of “Reckless Love” with a full-length collection of powerful, honest songs born of a year-long sabbatical in 2019.
Cory Asbury latest album “To Love a Fool” opens with a bright whistle, a happy tune, and an effective falsetto extolling the infinite reach of God’s love. The opener—“Canyons”—serves as one end of a broad album. Not only is there a range of tones and tempos, there are extensive explorations of the faith. The album tackles intimate conversations with God, vulnerable pleas for forgiveness, and celebrations of His love.
There is a wealth of meaning in Asbury’s vocal delivery. When he sings, “the weight of the world falls off my shoulders,” we feel both the gravity of that burden and the lightness of its release. With that said, a couple of tracks feel over-produced and threaten to distract from the emotion built into the voice.
All told, this is an excellent sophomore release from a formidable voice in Christian music.
